Squirm Before Dawn

As promised I went and saw the retro horror double feature from Jeff Lieberman this weekend - the 1981 slasher Just Before Dawn, which I'd seen and enjoyed a couple of times before, and the 1976 "When Earthworms Attack!" drive-in-esque  classic Squirm. There were about ten other people in attendance - what is this world coming to? I suppose the smart people were out in Queens getting surprised by Paul Thomas Anderson though. (BASTARDS.)

But we was the second smartest! Lieberman was there for both movies and was a hoot to listen to - here's a fun-fact: he could have cast Michelle Pfeiffer in the final girl role in Just Before Dawn, but didn't. Fine by me - Deborah Benson is really very terrific in the part.

Seriously though if Paul Thomas Anderson knew anything about Cinema he would have chosen the Squirm audience for his NYC screening of The Master, not those silly Taxi Driver folks. Get hip, PTA!

JA, I just watched Squirm on DVD the other night. Well, it's very low budget. If you listen to the audio commentary the woman with the long red hair was supposed to be Kim Bassinger but they thought she was too pretty and Sylvester Stallone was also supposed to be in it and he was trying to get Rocky made. I will see Just Before Dawn at some point but it's not available on Netflix right now. I'm guessing this will be the only comment since this post was last summer.
