Quote of the Day

.
"It's still Batman running around in a stupid cape. I just don't think it's elevated. Christopher Nolan's best movie is Memento, and that is an interesting movie. I don't think his Batman movies are half as interesting though they're 20 million times the expense ... A superhero movie, by definition, you know, it's comic book. It's for kids. It's adolescent in its core. That has always been its appeal, and I think people who are saying Dark Knight Rises is 'supreme cinema art,' I don't think they know what the fuck they're talking about."

--- That's David Cronenberg on The Dark Knight Rises. (via) I'm just gonna leave that there, y'all can discuss! (Here's my TDKR review.)

I actually think that "The Prestige" is Christopher Nolan's best movie. Followed by "Inception". "Memento" was great except for the huge plot hole-he remembers the fact that he can't remember. He wakes up every day and automatically knows that he has no memory of what happened. Still a good movie though. Nolan's Batman films all have their positives and negatives. "BB" was too boring for me. "TDK" was amazing but the third act was too rushed and I still say that Two-Face should have been kept alive for the third movie. Speaking of, "TDKR" was just okay. JGL was the best thing about it. Hathaway was fine but didn't really do much despite her character actually doing a lot to hurt/help Batman out. Hardy was good but Bane didn't really do it for me. I don't know. Let's just say, I talked a lot during the movie to my friend because we didn't understand/care about half of what was going on, haha.

a) Kids don't read comics. Kids haven't read comics since the 1990s. Comics are written for adult males who read comics as kids.

b) People who direct movies based on graphic novels shouldn't throw stones.

Additionally, I'm not sure that movies about monster flies, vampire cannibals, and killer telepaths are any more elevated than movies about superheroes. But if Cronenberg is willing to write most of his pre-Spider filmography as equally stupid, then I suppose it's a permissible critique.

To be fair, Cronenberg WAS in Jason X.

Also to be fair, Jason X is awesome.

George R R Martin is going to fight Cronemberg for that!

He's absolutely right.

I'd like to add that whenever I hear anyone saying Nolan's Batman is "realistic" I cringe and think of Bill Gates dressed as a bat, trying to fight crime. Presposterous.

The only realistic thing about Nolan's Batman (or any Batman, for that matter) is that it doesn't have any super natural powers -- and it does somewhat live in the real, material world.

*Preposterous.

Looks like somebody forgot that the high horse he rode in on is actually a giant, man-eating fly.

Cronenberg's fairly preposterous himself.

Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch (heck, even Crash or eXistenZ ) are nothing to laugh about!

Except he never acted like The Fly was a super serious movie. There's an obvious tongue-in-cheek aspect to almost every single one of his movies (if not to all of them). Unlike Nolan -- who takes himself a way too seriously, and seems to be believe his own hype.

JA -- would love to have an edit button on MNPP's comment section. I make a lot of typos.
