Far From All That Fear Allows The Soul

.

Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows
x Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
= Todd Haynes' Far From Heaven

Now that right there would make
for a fine night's film-viewing, wouldn't it?

Here's a fun fact about Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul - the lead actor, El Hedi ben Salem, was Fassbinder's boyfriend for a dozen years or so. In 1982, a couple of years after they'd broken up, Salem got drunk in a bar in Berlin and stabbed three people dead. He came home and told Fassbinder, "Now you don't have to be afraid anymore." (via) He was arrested and subsequently hung himself in jail. Fassbinder dedicated Querelle to Salem - Querelle came out in September of 1982; Fassbinder had already died from mixing sleeping pills and cocaine in June.

Okay, maybe "fun fact" wasn't quite the right phrase there.

Okay I was really expecting a fun fact you know. But I guess depressing fact just doesn't have that ring to it.
