Review - Dog Soldiers

///

Why is it that werewolves have been looking so doggone crappy lately? Dog Soldiers is another good werewolf movie done in by relatively crappy looking monsters. The film is smart enough to keep the shots of the werewolves relatively quickly edited and often in shadow, but then there will be a moment where we get a good look at a cheesy plastic face with a barely movable mouth and all fright just flies out the window.

I attribute it to the strange phenomenon as of late to make the werewolves far too hairless. I want head to toe Chewbacca fur on my werewolf, not some slick gray skinned muscle man with a furry helmet on his head!

Anyway, Dog Soldiers is decent enough but doesn't overcome the limits of its wolf design. I don't know what the budget was on the film but I'm guessing that's where the limitations bore down. They've got a decent enough story, and there were some very impressively staged scenes. The actors were all believable, as well, though the accents were a little thick at times. I especially liked the several allusions to fairy tales through the story, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and Goldilocks; the little embattled cottage in the woods was a great set, too.

But yeah. Not wholly impressed. Though I will give the film props for staying away from the terrible realm of CG werewolves, like Underworld and Harry Potter, because those are the epitome of ass. Just put some more hair on those bitches, and get that snout moving some, people!
