Review - The Handmaid's Tale

Example

This would be an example of How NOT to adapt a novel into a film.

1 - Do NOT turn a feminist critique of White Male Panic into a bosom-heaving Skinemax flick.
2 - Do NOT let your heroine wander around freely whenever she wants when the entire idea is based on her imprisonment.
3 - Do NOT cast an actress as hypnotizing as Faye Dunaway and then erase everything that made her character in the book interesting leaving her with nothing to do but kneel in a garden or unwind yarn.
4 - Do NOT give the movie an IMPOSSIBLE happy ending, including a third-rate car chase and fireballs.

Someone with half a brain needs to remake this movie so kids in 11th grade with a paper deadline don't have to sit through this cinematic abortion in order to pass English. The novel couldn't be any more current; its future-vision fits into the BushWorld ideology perfectly. I'd love to have someone like Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) direct an adaptation. Someone who didn't feel the need to tear Offred's boobs out of the enforced dress code at every given opportunity.

What a waste. Sorry, Margaret.

Also, someone needs to film Oryx & Crake, which I (blasphemy) think is even better than Handmaid.
