10 Off My Head - 10 Best Movies of 10 Years Ago

.
Everybody's been doing their top ten lists for 2013 lately (case in glorious point) and I've felt a little left out. I'm left out by my own making obviously, I could make a list if I felt like it. It just doesn't feel right to me until I see everything I can, and no matter how hard I work that never seems to happen until at least March of the following year every time around. And anyway, I like giving myself some extra time to consider the year and not rush to judgement - I'm a tortoise, man! No hare here. And so in that blessed spirit of defiant sloooowness, I've decided to institute a new tradition here at MNPP - every New Years I'm going to give you a list of the best movies that are a decade old. That is, my list looking back at the year from now, not my list as it was ten years ago. I'm especially curious how this'll fare once we get to the years I've already documented lists for with The Golden Trousers, to see how my mind's changed, if my mind's changed, in the decade since, but we've got four years til that starts being a thing - I didn't start the Trousers til 2007. But for now, I totally feel like it's safe to say these are my favorite movies of 2003! (A few runners-up: Peter Pan, Finding Nemo, X2: X-Men United, Memories of Murder, Dogville, The Triplets of Bellville) And now, drum-roll...

10. All the Real Girls

9. Raising Victor Vargas

8. Dirty Pretty Things

7. 28 Days Later

6. Monster

5. Japanese Story

4. Final Destination 2

3. Kill Bill Volume 1

2. Oldboy

1. Lost in Translation

So what's yours???
And happy New Years!

Where The Tree Tops Glisten... With Gore!

.
Have a happy holiday or whatever, y'all! I'm off til after New Years. If you wake up one day between now and then and need to know what to do and I'm not there to tell you, just go watch Black Christmas (the original one) or Silent Night Deadly Night or Gremlins (the first one or the sequel, they'll both do). That'll get you by. Bye!
.

Here A Ho There A Ho

.
Everywhere a ho ho.

In related news, Tom Hardy is definitely making that mountaineering movie with Go director Doug Liman, and it looks liked Noted Homosexual Luke Evans is going to be his co-star. No doubt Luke will make sure that only one sleeping bag gets packed.
.

The Lone Ranger in 150 Words or Less

.
Armie Hammer really should have insisted that his character wore the mask more often. And that they made it bigger. Like, Jason Voorhees in the second movie sack sized. Then nobody would've even known he was in it and it wouldn't be a blight on his resume, and I wouldn't have even bothered to see it and it wouldn't be a blight on my life, and everybody would have gone picking daisies and dancing in the park instead, and oh my god what a happy life that would've been for all of us. But no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Now we're all soiled with slaphappy cartoon excrement - stink stank stunk.

Today's Fanboy Delusion

Today I'd rather be...

... checking Byung-hun Lee for weapons.

Well one good thing's come out of the news that I Saw the Devil is being remade, at least - it reminded me that Lee had talked about getting his bum out in Red 2, which I didn't see in the theater but knew was on DVD now, and now we can cap it. And judging by what I'm seeing I'm glad I skipped it in the theater since this was the only reason I'd have gone (the first movie was monstrous) and he barely shows cheek. Still what he's got going on above the belt's nothing to sneeze at! Hit the jump for more...

I Am Link

.
--- Devil May Care - The great great great 2010 Korean thriller I Saw the Devil, which was all over my end-of-the-year awards that year, is getting an American remake, says The Playlist. Yeah good luck with that, guys. No Byung-hun Lee equals flop!

--- New Past - Over at The Film Experience Amir got to talk to Iranian director Asghar Farhadi! I'm holding off on reading it until after I see The Past (probably not til next week, sigh), but this man's certified brilliant from all I've seen so far.

--- Lil Wizard - JK Rowling is working on a play that will tell the story of Harry Potter before any of the books, when he was a wee little orphan. I guess his early years with the Dorsleys living under the stairs then? Well that sounds totally depressing.

--- I Love Lex - I wrote up a few thoughts yesterday over at The Film Experience about the news that Joaquin Phoenix's name is being tossed out to play the villain in the Superman Vs. Batman movie, which everybody thinks is gonna be Lex Luthor. Post-Her I am pro-Joaquin, so it's complicated.

--- And Speaking of Her, here's an interview with Spike Jonze about the making of that movie, which is out in limited release right this very second oh my god why aren't I sitting in a theater watching Her right now you guys?

--- Frances On Down - Tis the time of year for Top Tens, and so I direct you to our pal Joe Reid's, because Joe is awesome, full stop. I love pretty much everything on his list, even if I think my final list when I get to it literally months from now (you know how I roll) will probably look pretty different. This was a good year, you guys! Also, Joe made a late change to his list, and so here he talks about the act of list-making.

--- Mutant Pride - Let's hope they can work their magic again - Bryan Singer's bringing back the team from the best X-Men movie by far X2, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, to write the next X-Men movie. Dougherty made Trick r' Treat, so he wins obviously.

We're Coming To Get Hugh

.
Alright which one of you guys is about to jump on Hugh? Do it! Anyway I have the best readers on the entire internet. I love you guys. Last night my switchboard lit up (note to self: use that as a dirty euphemism some time) with messages that as I'd demanded only two days ago Hugh Jackman went and wore a brand new pair of swimming trunks on the beach.

We won! They could be tinier, but it's a step in the right direction. Also, hello Hugh. Since you're apparently reading this, you should know I've seen you twice at that bakery down the street from your house and the next time Deb's off doing whatever she does all day (cough scissoring cough), I'll totally share a scone with you. (Note to self: "share a scone" is a dirty euphemism.)

New shorts celebration aside, I am more about the shots of Hugh Jackman's "huge ackman" bulging against his towel as he dries off. Now that's a jolly holiday. See a bunch after the jump!

Good Morning, Godric

.
A happy 24th birthday to one-time Godric Allan Hyde, who seems to have slipped off back to Dane-land to work, leaving us smitten fang-bangers to pine from across the endless seas. Don't you think that he should be the one that rescues his beloved Alexander Skarsgard from his singed penis fate? Well until that happens you can see lots more of Allan right here.

Fruitvale Station in 200 Words or Less

.
At a certain point I just had to look Fruitvale Station in the face and be all, "Will you please hold the damned camera steady?" The needless overkill on the shaky cam aesthetic was typical of the issues I had with the film, which probably slightly outweigh what I liked. It's close to 50/50 - I think everybody performance-wise is very very good (I wish I saw Melanie Diaz in so many more movies than I get to see Melanie Diaz in), only it's in service of a movie that gets a little ham-fisted about itself. I wish the film didn't start with the real footage -it throws off the "this is just a normal day in a guy's life" vibe and underlines and draws a circle of import around moments that bleeds them kind of dry. You can almost see the capital letters affixed to This Is The Last Time He Will See His Daughter, and so many moments like that. For something attempting to be intimate, it's instead kind of smothering.
.

Fifty Years Til Schweiger

.
We were just talking about the German actor Til Schweiger and his naked body parts in the movie Maybe Maybe Not a dozen or so days ago, and here we are again. No we still haven't seen the movie; it's just his fiftieth birthday today, so's I figure let's remind me. Whether I mean let's remind me to watch the movie, or let's remind me that I like to look at Til Schweiger's naked body parts, I'll leave open for discussion. Til can next be seen in Muppets Most Wanted; I have a feeling he'll probably be clothed for that one, sad face.

Future Ant-Man Behind The Scenes Footage

.
You know it's true.

So what do we think about Paul Rudd maybe probably being Ant Man? We took a poll back in October when it was rumored to be between Joseph Gordon Levitt and Mr. Rudd and JGL won, but it wasn't a massive blow-out or anything. (gif via)

Good Morning, Jake

.
It's Jake Gyllenhaal's birthday today! Our beloved is turning thirty-three - it's his Jesus year! As in "Jesus Christ will you take off you pants already?" Anyway I would link back to all of the past birthday posts inn his honor, year after year, but we've been doing them so long as to mortify my stamina right upfront. I have to save something for Jake bday beej later on, after all. Priorities...

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Rhonda Epinstalk: Cancer? Oh my God!
I am gonna go bald and have to eat macrobiotic food!

Happy 45, Rachel Griffiths!

Today's Fanboy Delusion

Today I'd rather be...

... battling the bulge with Zac Efron.
(And Dave Franco, of course.)
.

.
Yup there's a new trailer for the comedy Neighbors, starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a couple who move into a house next door to a fraternity led by Zac & Dave, and as with the first it's chock-filled with Efron exploitation of the finest sort.

You might recall the film was once called Townies, and we saw all sorts of gratuitous shenanigans from the set - click here and click here and click here and click here and click here for those fine pics. (I'm nothing if not thorough.) And then you can go ahead and hit the jump for lots more from this trailer, because I know you're just as thorough as I am...
