A very happy 45th birthday to Jason Clarke today, who we imagine is having a nice time these days, what with his big Summer blockbuster turning out to be one of those rare unicorns that are well-reviewed and a financial success as well. I haven't written anything about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes yet - by the time I saw it I felt like my general opinion had been said a million different ways - smarter than your average bear, actual curiosity about the morality of war, holy monkey lips, so on, et cetera, blah blah...
... the interesting conversation has come this week with a focus in on the lack of female characters in the film, which did stand out like a sore opposable thumb to me. Two pieces worth checking out that I've read (let me know if you've seen more) this one at Vulture and then this one expounding upon that one over at IndieWire. It's a problem! But aaaanyway back to the topic at hand we're here for Jason today... and he's here for us.

I do decry the general lack of female characters in blockbuster films. But it didn't bother me as much in this particular film because of its singular focus on tackling the theme of violence and moral fallibility, which it does so well. I think Reeves didn't really have gender politics on his mind and that's fine but I know that's still no excuse not to have more female characters. I do want to point out that one of the more prominent apes in the film, Maurice, was played by a female actress. I really thought that character was female despite the name and it wasn't until I've read in an article that Maurice was a male orangutan that I realized my mistake.
Thank you Kathryn Bigelow for showing the world the hunky smooth torso with a sensitive soul and a fiery temperament. We owe you a lot!!!
Don't mean to belittle the issue but I think the bigger crime of the film was in not showing a half-naked Jason Clarke, at the least.
