3 Say What?:
PURPLE RAIN!
You got it, Jim! Good work. :)
As an aside, I have never seen this movie. Prince has always creeped me out too much. (Although I do love some of his music, of course.)
This movie wouldn't dispel your sense of creep by a long shot, so you're probably better off. Much as I love Prince, and particularly '80s Prince, Pauline Kael's takedown of "Purple Rain" is pretty dead-on.
That said, it does do one thing I kind of admire, and that's focus the idea of achieving one's dreams around actual work. You see the musicians dutifully showing up for rehearsals, writing songs, practicing routines ... it doesn't linger too long on it because there's that (cough cough) story to get on with, but it's there, and it's amazing how a little of that can go a long way. I've always said "Purple Rain" has an edge over "Rent" because at least you see the characters working on their craft every so often.
